Player Reveals Biggest Regret: Missing Out on Iconic Celtic vs Rangers Old Firm Derby Despite Winning The Premier League Title With Chelsea.

Former Chelsea, Newcastle, and France striker Loic Remy, who won a Premier League title during his time at Stamford Bridge, has confessed that his biggest football regret is never experiencing a Celtic vs Rangers Old Firm derby.

The 38-year-old, who announced his retirement in 2023 after a short spell at Brest, enjoyed an illustrious career that saw clubs spend over £50 million on his services. Despite his many achievements, including a Premier League title with Chelsea from 2014 to 2017 and 30 caps for France, Remy admitted that not playing in Scottish football’s most iconic fixture remains a major disappointment.

Remy’s Passion for the Old Firm Derby

Speaking to Max Dahlquist at Plejmo.com, Remy expressed his admiration for the passion surrounding the Glasgow rivalry:

“I would’ve loved to have experienced a derby between Celtic and Rangers. I heard about the game when I moved to play in England, and I’d love to experience one now in the crowd.

“You hear about the passion and the feeling behind it, and that’s a great feeling for a fan but also a player. You get that feeling that losing isn’t an option, and people in the street would even approach you to talk about the game.

“I love derbies like that, and one day I’d love to go to Scotland to see that game in person.”

A Career Spanning Top Leagues Across Europe

Loic Remy’s career began with prolific spells at OGC Nice and Marseille, where his goalscoring prowess earned him a move to England with Queens Park Rangers. In January 2013, QPR signed him for a club-record £8 million, reportedly paying him £80,000 per week. However, despite his best efforts, he was unable to prevent the club from being relegated to the Championship.

The French forward then moved to Newcastle United on loan, where he flourished, earning the club’s ‘Player of the Year’ award. His impressive form attracted interest from top clubs, with Chelsea ultimately signing him for £10.5 million. At Stamford Bridge, he won the 2014-2015 Premier League title under José Mourinho, playing a crucial role in the Blues’ success.

Remy’s career also included stints at Crystal Palace, Las Palmas, Getafe, and Turkish side Çaykur Rizespor before he returned to France for a final spell with Brest.

A Lifelong Passion for Iconic Football Rivalries

Despite a career spanning multiple leagues and countries, it is the legendary intensity of the Old Firm derby that has left Remy longing for more. The clash between Celtic and Rangers is renowned worldwide for its fierce rivalry, electric atmosphere, and deep-rooted history. While he never got to play in one, Remy remains determined to experience it from the stands, appreciating the passion that makes it one of football’s most captivating fixtures.

Loic Remy may have lifted the Premier League trophy and graced some of the biggest stages in world football, but his words are a testament to the magic and allure of the Old Firm—an occasion where football’s raw emotion and fierce competition are on full display.
