Pundit’s Bold Claim: Philippe Clement Has Brendan Rodgers’ Number
In the ongoing narrative surrounding Celtic and Rangers, one pundit has made a claim that has left fans scratching their heads.

Brendan Rodgers recently faced Philippe Clement twice in high-stakes Glasgow Derby matches, with each manager taking home a different result.
Celtic suffered a 3-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox under Clement’s management just under a week ago. However, Rodgers’ side triumphed in the League Cup final earlier, coming from behind to secure the trophy on penalties. Despite these contrasting results, a new narrative has emerged, questioning Rodgers’ ability to outsmart Clement.
Ewen Cameron’s Statement
Radio pundit Ewen Cameron shared his thoughts on The Big Scottish Football Podcast [16m], stating:
“I’m going to make a bold claim here. Philippe Clement has Brendan Rodgers’ number.
He has his number. The last two Old Firm games, Rangers battered them on both occasions. Yes, they might have lost the Cup final on penalties, but overall, over the piece, in the Cup final, Rangers were head and shoulders the better team.
In the Old Firm game, Rangers were head and shoulders ahead of Celtic, so I think he’s got Brendan Rodgers’ number.”
Cameron also suggested that Clement’s tactical approach suits facing stronger opponents, such as Celtic, pointing to a counterattacking style often seen in European competition.
A Look at the Record
Celtic fans were quick to dismiss Cameron’s claim, pointing to the club’s dominance in Glasgow Derbies over the past four years. Celtic have won four league titles in succession and maintained superiority in this historic rivalry.
While Clement’s Rangers side did emerge victorious in their most recent meeting, the overall record remains heavily in Rodgers’ favor. Under Clement, Rangers have managed just one win in their last seven clashes with Celtic—a statistic that hardly supports the idea that he has “figured out” Rodgers.
What Lies Ahead
Cameron’s remarks have sparked debate, but the next Derby at Celtic Park will serve as a decisive test. If Clement can replicate his Ibrox success on Celtic’s home turf, his tactical prowess may indeed warrant further consideration. Until then, comments suggesting he has Rodgers’ number appear premature, with Celtic’s sustained dominance in the rivalry standing as a testament to their superiority.
