“Pyro Crackdown! Rangers, Celtic & Motherwell Hit with Punishments After Cup Chaos”
The SPFL has dropped the hammer on Rangers, Celtic, and Motherwell after chaotic pyrotechnic displays delayed matches during the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals.

Motherwell have been handed a suspended sanction, meaning if there’s another pyro-related incident before March 30, 2027, their fans will lose 800 tickets for a future Premier Sports Cup match at Hampden.
Meanwhile, Rangers and Celtic have been hit with immediate ticket reductions for their next League Cup games at the national stadium, a punishment reflecting the scale of the pyro shows during their respective semi-final ties.
“Large-Scale, Organised and Illegal” – SPFL Slams Clubs Over Fan Behavior
The SPFL didn’t hold back in their ruling, calling the pyro displays “large-scale, organised, and illegal,” citing significant match delays:
- Motherwell vs. Rangers – 5-minute delay
- Celtic vs. Aberdeen – 14-minute delay
- Premier Sports Cup Final – 3-minute delay
The league body also accused the clubs of failing to identify or discipline those responsible, highlighting the health and safety risks to fans, players, and stadium staff and the inconvenience caused to supporters both in the stadium and watching worldwide.
Clubs & Government Respond: “Pyro Has No Place in Football”

Motherwell issued a statement acknowledging the suspended punishment, stressing:
“The club reiterates that pyrotechnics are illegal within football stadiums and are dangerous.”
Scottish Government Secretary for Victims and Community Safety Siobhian Brown backed the SPFL’s actions, saying:
“It is a criminal offence to take or use pyrotechnics in football stadiums. As well as being illegal, they can cause serious injury and spoil the enjoyment of games for the vast majority of fans.”
With both immediate and suspended punishments now in place, the SPFL is sending a clear warning: if pyro use continues, ticket allocations will keep shrinking—and fans could pay the price.
