Andy Halliday of the Rangers reacts to the news of Connor Barron’s transfer.
Andy Halliday has admitted that he’d love to sign Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron, implying that he’s much more than the “dog” some have labelled him.
The Light Blues had been linked with a move for the 21-year-old, with Football Scotland [13 December] reporting that he could be available for a reduced fee in January because Aberdeen don’t want to lose him for free at the end of the season.

Barron was an unused substitute in Rangers’ 1-0 victory over Barry Robson’s side in the Viaplay Cup final, and Halliday was surprised not to see him, admitting that he would love to have the midfielder in Philippe Clement’s squad.

When asked if he’d take Barron at Ibrox on Open Goal (19 December, 1:05:40), he said: “Aye, yeah I like him, I think he’s good.” Again, as I’ve said before, everyone thinks he’s this dog, but he’s not.

“He’s controlled on the ball as well, so sharp.”
Rangers could benefit from looking within Scotland for some slightly younger heads to add to their midfield, especially given that many of Clement’s options at Ibrox aren’t getting any younger.

John Lundstram and Ryan Jack are nearing the end of their careers, and while Jose Cifuentes and Nicolas Raskin have been signed to add some youth in the middle of the park, they have had their own issues with injury and form this season.
As Halliday suggested, most people in Scottish football regard Barron as a “dog” midfielder due to his tenacity and off-the-ball work ethic, but he does have some possession quality that would likely see him succeed at Ibrox.

If the deal can be completed at a reduced price as originally reported, it may be too good to pass up for the Light Blues. As a young and promising prospect, the 21-year-old will not only bring quality but will also likely provide the Gers with some sell-on value to fit the player trading model in place in Glasgow.
