Celtic have the opportunity to go top of the Scottish Premiership after Rangers suffered shocking 2-1 defeat at home to Motherwell on Saturday.

Theo Bair gave the Steelmen a perfect start at Ibrox after just nine minutes, slotting past custodian Jack Butland off a Jack Vale assist.

Rangers had opportunities in the first half but went into the break trailing, with a lot of work to do in the second 45 minutes.

Philippe Clement’s team appeared to have regained control when James Tavernier converted a penalty to equalise.

Motherwell, on the other hand, rallied and continued to threaten, eventually receiving their reward from a Dan Casey header off the back post that eluded Butland.

Interestingly, it is the Fir Park club’s first league victory at Ibrox in 27 years.

Celtic have a big chance to take control.

Celtic now know that if they beat Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday afternoon, they will move one point ahead of the Ibrox challengers and return to the top of the league table.

That is not a guarantee, of course. Throughout the season, the Bhoys have been inconsistent. Hearts defeated Celtic 2-0 the last time they met in December.

However, following a morale-boosting week, Brendan Rodgers’ side will be confident of securing an important victory in the capital.

Back in October, Tynecastle saw a 4-1 result with four different goal scorers thrashing Steven Naismith’s side.

Celtic has been given an opportunity that must not be passed up. It would shift the title race momentum back to the Bhoys after a difficult period, setting up the final nine games perfectly.
