Philippe Clement faced the wrath of Rangers fans after Connor Barron was substituted against Hearts.

Boos rang out across the stadium as a large number of fans expressed their displeasure with the decision to take the popular midfielder off during tonight’s match at Ibrox. Barron was replaced by Dujon Sterling on 68 minutes, with the Light Blues leading the Jambos by a single goal. Barron’s departure was met with loud jeers from the home crowd, which was not pleased with the unexpected decision.

Skipper James Tavernier was also rooting for Neraysho Kasanwirjo, but it was when Barron’s name was announced that fans expressed their dissatisfaction. Premier Sports commentator Rory Hamilton responded live to the substitution, saying, “Well, you can hear the reaction.

“I think this is down to the fact that fans do not like that Philippe Clement is taking off Connor Barron. He’s being replaced by Dujon Sterling. The other change is that right-back captain James Tavernier is heading off and Neraysho Kasanwirjo will come on for him.”

Michael Stewart also questioned Barron’s increased number, claiming that Mohamed Diomande should have been removed instead. The pundit stated: “The one that’s more surprising is that Connor Barron is being taken off. I do wonder… we’ve heard a lot about the sports scientists and I do wonder whether it’s just the load and looking to take him off. I’m looking more at Diomande and thinking he’s not really been involved as much in the make up of the game.”

Commentator Hamilton pointed out that Barron was underutilised at Aberdeen, where he became a bit-part player as his contract expired. He went on to say,
“You have to say, at no stage of his career up until now, Connor Barron will have played as much football as he has so far in his Rangers career.

“He wasn’t a mainstay of the Aberdeen side, particularly when his contract was running out. He dropped out of the team when as a club, they were playing Thursday to Sunday. But now, he’s one of the first names on the team sheet for Rangers.”
