Rangers held talks over a £2.5 million deal, and forgotten man hasn’t started a game since.

Jonathan Panzo continues to struggle after Rangers missed out on a summer deal for the Nottingham Forest player, with reports suggesting that his loan spell at Cardiff City may be cut short.

When the team news came out last weekend, Jonathan Panzo’s absence from the Cardiff City squad for their 4-0 FA Cup third round defeat at Sheffield Wednesday sparked plenty of speculation.

According to the Bluebirds’ assistant coach, the defender’s absence is due to ‘an agreement’ with his parent club, Nottingham Forest, who appear keen to avoid a situation in which the 23-year-old is cup-tied ahead of a potential change of scenery during the January window.

And a change of scenery, not to mention a change of clubs, appears increasingly likely.
Rangers sought Jonathan Panzo from Nottingham Forest.

Panzo, who reportedly discussed a £2.5 million move to Rangers last summer, has made only five appearances since joining Cardiff. The former Chelsea youngster has yet to start a Championship game.

It should come as no surprise, then, that his time in South Wales may be cut short, with Daily Mirror reporter Darren Witcoop writing on X that Panzo, along with Arsenal-owned custodian Alex Runarsson and one-time Rangers linked striker Ike Ugbo, may be on his way out.

“(A possible exit for Panzo) can happen,” Cardiff manager Erol Bulut told Wales Online in December. “We’ve got options. If this happens, we will look into another (defender).”

Out of favour at Cardiff City.

According to the Daily Record, Panzo was one of Mick Beale’s primary targets during the summer of 2023.

And, given how many of Beale’s signings have performed since arriving in Glasgow – Sam Lammers returning to the Netherlands after only two goals and two assists in 31 games – Panzo’s struggles in South Wales do little to suggest that he would have ended a sorry run of ill-fated additions under Philippe Clement’s predecessor at Ibrox.

in other news, Nottingham Forest set for ‘crucial talks’ as January transfer is in the works.
