Rangers hit the jackpot on a player they sold under Walter Smith in 2008
With the Premiership title within their grasp, Glasgow Rangers head into the final eight games of the season.
All they need to do is win their final league games to secure their first championship since the 2020–21 campaign. Naturally, this is easier said than done, particularly considering that two of their final eight games will be against Celtic.
But with all the confidence Philippe Clement has given his team, they won’t be put off by this Celtic team, who has had ups and downs under Brendan Rodgers.
The Gers have conceded a league-low 17 goals while scoring 67 goals this season, seven fewer than Celtic.
Their success this season has been largely based on having a solid defence, and there’s no doubt that this will be important in the upcoming games.
Jack Butland has been an inspired signing, to say the least, keeping 23 clean sheets across his 47 matches in all competitions, conceding just 37 goals in the process.
John Souttar and Connor Goldson, Clement’s preferred center-back duo, have flourished in recent months and are now the core members of the defence.
Even though both players have been playing at nearly peak performance levels since the beginning of the year, their current market values do not reflect this.
In fact, Souttar is currently the second-cheapest center-back for the team, valued at just €0.7m (£600k), according to Football Transfers.
Even at his best, Goldson is valued less than anticipated. With just two years left on his contract, it seems improbable that a team would make an offer higher than the €2.5 million (£2.1 million) that the 31-year-old is currently worth.
Inflation-adjusted, though, Rangers sold Carlos Cuellar, a centre back, more than 15 years ago, for a price greater than the combined value of Souttar and Goldson.
For what amount did the Rangers sign Carlos Cuellar?
The summer of 2007 was significant for the club after a stormy 2006–07 season, which was only avoided by the late, great Walter Smith keeping things in balance.
Transfers were happening all over the place, with players coming and going in equal measure.
Thirteen new players made their arrival at Ibrox, including Steven Naismith, DaMarcus Beasley, and Daniel Cousin, but Cuellar seemed like the most intriguing addition.
After making an impression for La Liga team Osasuna in a UEFA Cup match against the Light Blues the previous season, the defender joined La Liga for a mere £2 million.
Throughout the season, the Spaniard showed himself to be a brilliant addition and performed admirably in Scottish and even continental football.
During his one and only season in Glasgow, he appeared in 65 games for the Gers, helping to shape the team that would still be in the running for a quadruple come May.
Though they would win the League Cup and Scottish Cup, they would regrettably finish runners-up in both the league and the UEFA Cup, losing to Celtic and Zenit St Petersburg, respectively.
