Rangers loanee may have ended his Ibrox career after what he said

Following comments he made last week about his time on loan with Alaves, Ianis Hagi may have already played his final game for Rangers.

After struggling for playing time at Ibrox, the 25-year-old was loaned out to the Spanish club in August for a season.

Former Gers fan favourite Hagi, who has made 99 appearances for the club, was unable to reclaim a starting spot after a year out.

Given that he is under contract until the end of the 2025-26 season, the Romanian international is technically set to return to Glasgow next summer.

However, if a recent interview he gave is any indication, it now appears more likely that he will stay at Alaves if a deal is reached.

“It has always been my favourite league and I have always followed it,” he said on the LaLiga podcast [16 November].

“I love Spanish football, the Spanish mentality. I’m in love with the country and the lifestyle here. I’m really enjoying my time here.”

Asked about Alaves in particular, Hagi stated, “They are always ambitious, and they align with who I am, my personality, and mentality.”

In terms of coded messages, Hagi has made it abundantly clear that he enjoys life in LaLiga and would gladly stay.

Even with Philippe Clement now in place, it’s difficult to see Hagi returning to Ibrox in the summer.

Hagi is said to have cost Rangers around £4.5 million to purchase permanently in May 2020 [Daily Record], and they will be looking to recoup that sum.

While he is clearly a talented player in need of regular playing time, he is not good enough to beg for a return.

It’s possible that Hagi is just trying to say the right things, but it appears that his future now lies outside of Glasgow.
