Rodgers Reveals Scales’ Costly Mistake Against Aberdeen Caused Lineup Change
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has explained why he chose Auston Trusty over Liam Scales at centre-back.
Interestingly, the Irishman highlighted Liam Scales’ error against Aberdeen at Celtic Park a fortnight ago, which resulted in the Dons’ opening goal.
Sokler’s introduction at half-time changed the game in the Dons’ favor, as Scales failed to match Sokler’s run in behind off a Jamie McGrath through ball.
The Irishman’s lack of pace and inability to read the situation was obvious, leaving the Slovenian striker one-on-one with Kasper Schmeichel.
Rodgers said: (Premier Sports), “It’s very tough because Liam has been absolutely brilliant for me since he’s gotten into the team, but we always try to look at each game, and I felt that with the striker that we think Aberdeen are going to play, he (Ester Sokler) makes lots of runs in behind.
“So just adding that extra bit of pace into the backline, Auston’s physicality is very, very good, and like I said, that was the reason for that.”
Rodgers’ comments highlight his ruthlessness, which is essential in top-level football.
Despite his excellent work over the last year, Scales was caught short against Aberdeen last time out, and the Irishman was unwilling to take the same risk against Jimmy Thelin’s side again.
Ultimately, the decision paid off, and given Rodgers’ extensive coaching experience, he is able to do so while also pushing Scales to improve.
For Trusty, this certainly validates Rodgers’ belief in the American, with his performance over the last month being a standout in a position that is frequently taken for granted.
