Roy Keane criticises Celtic’s training facilities and bad eggs in the dressing room following Manchester United culture shock.
The Irishman was surprised by what he was met with when he made the switch in 2005.
Roy Keane admits he was unimpressed with Celtic’s training facilities after leaving Manchester United due to cultural differences.
After a falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils legend left the club and made the stunning move to the Hoops in 2005. After his Parkhead career began with a shocking Scottish Cup defeat to Clyde, things didn’t improve much on an individual level, even though the club did win the title under Gordon Strachan.
The fiery Irishman, who had previously played for one of the world’s most prestigious clubs at Old Trafford, was unprepared for the difference in training facilities. And the fact that the players had to meet at Celtic Park before driving up to the training facility in their gear astounded him.
He also claims there were “one or two idiots” in the dressing room, but insists he got along with the majority.
Keane told Gary Neville’s Stick To Football podcast: “You talk about being shocked, I remember when I went to Celtic – it’s this iconic, amazing club. But I leave United, and the stadium is amazing, but I haven’t seen the training ground.
“I am going back a few years, they have a good one now, but I was in the dressing room at Celtic and they go to the dressing room to get changed, and I had been at United; but you change at Celtic Park and drive to the training ground in your boots and your gear.”Three or four of us would drive in the car, and it was usually f****** raining up there. We would train before getting back in the car and driving back. You suddenly realise, ‘This is different’.
“But, despite my comforts at United, I enjoyed being in another dressing room. There were one or two idiots among the Celtic lads, but in general, they were all excellent young men. “I really enjoyed my time at Celtic because of the different dressing room.”
Keane also claims Strachan decided to leave recruitment after making too many mistakes in the transfer market.
He went on to say, “When Gordon was manager of Celtic, and Gordon had some success, he said he avoided transfers. He claimed he signed too many bad players.
“Gordon raised his hand and said, ‘I am not very good at spotting players.'” He had obviously had success bringing players in at Coventry or whatever, but he reached the point where he said, “I’m backing out of this.” I’m sure he had some conversations, but he said he wouldn’t get involved.”
