Selling Cadamarteri: Sheffield Wednesday must avoid these 2 transfer scenarios before August 30
Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping for a much-improved campaign in the Championship this season, after their slow start to 2023-24 threatened to send them back to the third tier of English football immediately.
After a dismal start to the previous season under Xisco Munoz, the Owls appeared destined to return to League One right away. However, they achieved safety after a stunning turnaround under Danny Rohl, finishing 20th in the standings.
Rohl’s long-term contract renewal with the team in May gave Wednesday a significant boost. The German hasn’t wasted any time in building his roster, with nine new players joining Hillsborough this summer.

Liam Palmer, Dominic Iorfa, Di’Shon Bernard, Barry Bannan, and Josh Windass have all signed new contracts; however, Ciaran Brennan, Reece James, George Byers, Tyreeq Bakinson, Juan Delgado, and Lee Gregory have all been released; Cameron Dawson and Will Vaulks have left after declining an extension offer.
With the transfer window ending in less than three weeks, the Owls will probably make a lot more additions and subtractions. We looked at two situations that Rohl will be hoping to avoid.
Failing to offload Mallik Wilks
Winger Mallik Wilks, who left Hull City in August 2022 after a protracted transfer pursuit, signed on Wednesday, but it’s safe to say the move was unsuccessful.
Many people had high expectations for Wilks, but he struggled with injuries while at Hillsborough, and after finishing the previous season with just one goal in 18 appearances across all competitions, his future is unclear.
A recent interview with Josh Windass, Wilks’ teammate, revealed that the winger “looks in incredible shape,” which has dispelled many of the rumours that his departure was imminent this summer.
Wilks is unlikely to play much this season due to competition from players like Anthony Musaba, Djeidi Gassama, and Olaf Kobacki in the wide areas. Additionally, he is likely to move on as League One trio Charlton Athletic, Reading, and Stockport County have expressed interest in signing him.
The Owls will undoubtedly be eager to sell some players who are not in Rohl’s plans in order to help balance the books, and they will be hoping that they can recoup some of the transfer fee they paid for Wilks. This is because they have spent money this summer, including an upcoming reported £3 million to re-sign Troyes striker Ike Ugbo on a permanent basis.
Selling Bailey Cadamarteri
Bailey Cadamarteri, who made his senior league debut for the team in November, had a fantastic breakthrough season last season, making 25 appearances across all competitions, scoring five goals and dishing out one assist to help Wednesday, still just eighteen years old, survive.
Because of his excellent club play, Cadamarteri was called up to the England under-19 squad for the first time in March. However, after Ugbo joined the team, his playing time was somewhat reduced.
Though Wednesday is anticipated to improve in the forward areas before the end of the window, Rohl declined to rule out a loan move for Cadamarteri. The now-19-year-old started just four times in the last three months of the campaign.
Although the Red Dragons are currently thought to be leading the race, Cadamarteri is thought to be interested in signing on loan from Wrexham, Huddersfield Town, Stockport County, Blackpool, Motherwell, and Dundee United. It is undeniable that a spell of regular football in League One or the Scottish Premiership would be beneficial for his development.
But Cadamarteri is drawing interest beyond just loan offers; earlier this summer, rumours circulated that he is being considered by several Premier League teams.
The Owls are probably hesitant to approve Cadamarteri’s permanent departure because he only signed a new long-term contract at Hillsborough in December. However, Championship teams are frequently at risk of losing their young players when elite teams are involved, especially if a sizable offer is made.
Even though Cadamarteri might not be ready to start every Wednesday just yet, the team has a very bright future for him, so owner Dejphon Chansiri needs to fight the urge to trade for him this summer.
