Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom aim to sign long-term deal with French club.
Mickael Nade, a Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom target, is ready to sign a new contract with Saint Etienne, according to Le Progres.
The Owls have had one of the EFL’s busiest summer transfer windows thus far. Danny Rohl has wasted no time in tailoring the group to his style following their amazing survival the last time around.
The Baggies’ business has been more subdued, but Carlos Corberan is certain he has a team capable of contending for promotion again in 2024/25.
Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom have been connected with defender Mickael Nade, whose contract with Ligue 1 newcomers Saint Etienne has ended. However, after appearing to be on his way to pastures new, the Frenchman appears to have reconsidered his plans.
According to Le Progres, Nade is set to sign a four-year contract with Saint Etienne.
He had looked at other options, including England, but the 24-year-old is expected to sign a new contract with the promoted club. As a result, the Owls and Baggies will have to search elsewhere for defensive reinforcements.
A U-turn from Nade.
Despite uncertainty about Nade’s future in France, Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom appeared to have made a wise decision in signing him. He is a big and powerful left-footed centre-back who contributed significantly to their promotion.
Nade has competed in both Ligue 2 and Ligue 1 since rising through the club’s development ranks, and at 25, he appears to have the best years of his career ahead of him.
As a result, on a free transfer, he would have been an excellent choice.
However, for the same reasons, Saint Etienne has persevered in their efforts to retain Nade. It now appears that their efforts will be rewarded, as he chooses to stay in France over a fresh start.
Looking elsewhere.
Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom will continue to look for a new defender.
A deal as clever as Nade’s may be difficult to obtain. However, there are still some quality free agent possibilities available, and the Championship pair will be looking for them.
Both have positions where they can pay player fees. It means they aren’t limited to the free transfer market when looking for another centre-back, even if a fee-based move isn’t as shrewd.
Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom are both off to a good start this summer and will be looking for fresh defensive alternatives.
