Sheffield Wednesday fans’ classy gesture during Sunderland game that fans will love

Last weekend, Sheffield Wednesday supporters raised a substantial sum of money for the Bradley Lowery Foundation.

Liam Palmer opened the score in the 29th minute following a superb pass from Barry Bannan, putting Sunderland behind. Nine minutes later, Josh Windass doubled the visitors’ lead with a goal from Pol Valentin’s cross.

Nevertheless, the game yielded a touching narrative. Sheffield Wednesday supporters once again demonstrated their class by supporting the Bradley Lowery Foundation and being philanthropically generous. Owls fans brilliantly raised an incredible £841.37 on the day thanks to the charity’s deployment of collection buckets at the away end turnstiles.

“We are so incredibly grateful for the amazing support we have received from the football community,” Bradley Lowery Foundation fundraiser and family support specialist Brooke Mitchell said to The Echo. In a fantastic display of support for Gemma Lowery and her family earlier this season, Sheffield Wednesday supporters also raised an incredible total of £29,140 for the Bradley Lowery Foundation. The gesture was made after Rotherham resident and Sheffield Wednesday supporter Dale Houghton, 32, was caught giggling while holding up a picture of the six-year-old, who tragically passed away from cancer in 2017, during a game against Sunderland.

Houghton received a suspended 12-week prison sentence in addition to a five-year ban from football game attendance. District Judge Marcus Waite handed down the 12-week sentence and ordered Houghton to perform 200 hours of unpaid labour at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court last November.

Bradley Lowery’s mother, Gemma Lowery, stated in a statement read aloud in court that Houghton’s actions had “brought on many emotions” and that Houghton’s behaviour was “not just disrespectful to Bradley and us all, but caused emotional turmoil to other children.”
