Sheffield Wednesday given honest Championship play-off verdict after season-opening victory
Play-offs could be a ‘bridge too far’ for Sheffield Wednesday
Although he thinks it might be a “bridge too far,” journalist George Smith hasn’t discounted Rohl’s potential.
“There’s really a sense of confidence that Wednesday can have a good season,” Smith stated in an interview with The Championship Chat Podcast. “I think for the vast majority of sort of level-headed Wednesday fans, a good season would resemble a top half finish.”
“I believe the playoffs could be a bridge too far, but it’s not impossible.” However, you never know what they’ll do with a manager like Danny Rohl and what they do from now until the end of the window.
It’s just too difficult to predict the Championship.
Fans of Wednesday won’t want to get too excited, but their victory over the weekend was undoubtedly their best start yet.
But it’s only a single game, and a lot can happen in the remaining games of the season.
On paper, Plymouth was one of the “easiest” opponents the Yorkshire team could have faced on opening day. Plymouth is predicted to be relegated.
It would be impossible to predict, but the Owls should hold off on making any significant decisions until after their matches against Leeds and Sunderland.
Rohl will be counting on the main players to remain healthy and to persevere through the really difficult games.
They must also maintain their consistency because, come January, the performance of some teams can fluctuate significantly.
February will be extremely difficult for Wednesday as they play Burnley, West Brom, Luton, and Coventry in quick succession.
Rohl has the potential to lead them to the playoffs, but there is still a very long way to go. It’s not a sprint, but a marathon.
