According to Sky Sports, Southampton paid £15 million for West Ham United’s Flynn Downes, with an additional £3 million expected in add-ons.

On Tuesday (16 July), the broadcaster stated that the newly promoted side has not paid the whole £18 million cost upfront as planned [Dharmesh Sheth, 15 July], but will pay the difference once add-ons are implemented.

Russell Martin’s side confirmed the 25-year-old’s return after Downes was granted permission to leave the Hammers’ pre-season training camp early to undergo a medical with the south coast club.

Vai Bhardwaj told Sky Sports that Southampton had bought West Ham midfielder Flynn Downes for £15 million.

“The cost includes £3 million in add-ons. Downes spent the season on loan at St Mary’s, making 37 appearances across all competitions as Southampton got promoted back to the Premier League.

How much did West Ham United receive for Flynn Downes following his transfer from Southampton?

West Ham would have loved to get Downes’ entire £18 million transfer fee upfront this summer, but they will be content to have the majority of the money through the London Stadium door right away.

They have still managed to profit from a player who never really managed to hold down a regular starting berth under David Moyes, and while they could have negotiated for more, this seems like a reasonable offer.

Hopefully, Julen Lopetegui will be handed this money to strengthen his squad ahead of the next season. Downes may not need to be directly replaced, but the Hammers are still looking for a few fresh players.
