Following in the footsteps of Fabio Carvalho, Tyler Morton, and Caoimhin Kelleher, the Saints are reportedly interested in signing another fringe Liverpool player, this time in the centre of defence.

According to sportwitness, Southampton is one of three teams interested in signing Liverpool defender Sepp Van Der Berg, alongside Wolfsburg and Bologna.

The Dutchman, who will be 23 in December, has yet to play a League game for the Reds, but he has played four Cup games.

He joined Liverpool from Zwolle in his native Holland, where he made 22 Eredivisie appearances, prompting the club to sign him in June 2019.

He is primarily a central defender, but can also play fullback.

He hasn’t spent much time at Anfield, however; in February 2021, he joined Preston North End on a loan deal that was extended to include the following season, during which he played 61 Championship games.

He then joined Schalke for the 22/23 season, but a serious ankle injury forced him to miss the majority of the season, and he only appeared in nine Bundesliga games.

Last season, he joined Mainz and had a much better season, playing 33 Bundesliga games.

According to Sportwitness, Bologna is interested in the Dutch defender, and the asking price is around 15 million euros, though closer to 12 million euros is more realistic. They also claim that Southampton is the main contender for his signature.

Van Der Berg is at a crossroads in his career; as he enters the final few months before turning 23, he has over 125 League games under his belt, but none for his current club, and he appears to be no closer to breaking through.

At the moment, it appears that agents of players on the fringes of the first team squad are working hard to get moves for their clients, with Southampton being a popular club to link a move to in the media.
