SPFL reaches new TV deal agreement; plans include more live matches and highlights shows among plans.
The SPFL has announced an enhanced agreement with the BBC, which includes a significant increase in live match coverage and the introduction of a new highlights show.
This move aims to bring more Scottish football action to fans across the country, particularly from the William Hill Championship.
More Live Games
Under the expanded deal, up to 30 live William Hill Championship matches will be broadcast each season, marking a notable increase in coverage. Neil Doncaster, SPFL Group Chief Executive, shared his enthusiasm for the development:
“The league is renowned for its incredible excitement and drama, and having up to 30 games broadcast live each season from the William Hill Championship is great news for Scottish football fans.”
BBC Scotland has been the primary broadcaster of live Championship matches since 2018, often showcasing games on Friday nights. This new agreement strengthens the channel’s role as the home of Scotland’s second-tier league.
Introduction of a New Highlights Show
In addition to the expanded live coverage, a new highlights programme will be produced, allowing fans to catch up on all the best action from across the SPFL. This initiative builds on the success of the league’s social media team, which has been producing highlights content for YouTube over the past two seasons.
The responsibility for the highlights package will now shift to BBC Scotland, starting in the New Year. Doncaster expressed his excitement:
“We are delighted that BBC Scotland will be taking over responsibility for that programme. This is great news for fans wanting to catch up with all the best action from across our leagues.”
Louise Thornton, Head of Commissioning at BBC Scotland, echoed this sentiment:
“It’s great news for audiences that we’ve secured the rights to show more live matches and provide a new highlights package.”
Impact on Scottish Football Fans
The expanded deal ensures that fans will have more opportunities than ever to enjoy the drama and excitement of Scottish football. With increased live game coverage and a dedicated highlights show, the SPFL continues to make strides in promoting the game and engaging with a broader audience.
This development further solidifies the partnership between the SPFL and the BBC, enhancing accessibility and visibility for one of the country’s most beloved sports.
