After a disappointing Championship campaign, Sunderland immediately focused on adding summer reinforcements in an effort to reclaim a spot in the top six the following year.
News about Sunderland transfers
The season began with the Black Cats off to a promising start, but after replacing Tony Mowbray with Michael Beale, things quickly went awry in a short-lived experiment. Mike Dodds was left to pick up the pieces in the interim, and he could only lead Sunderland into a very disappointing 16th place finish.
Now that the season is over, The Stadium of Light needs to appoint a permanent manager. This is a decision that needs to be made carefully, especially after the decision to hire Beale all those months ago. Having said that, Paul Heckingbottom, who was fired by Premier League team Sheffield United earlier in the season, is among the names that have been floated for the open position.
Heckingbottom or someone else in charge will have a busy summer ahead of them, which might begin with a great deal. Divin Mubama, who is expected to sign a contract worth £4,000 per week with West Ham United, is expected to leave the team, and The Athletic reports that Sunderland is in the running to sign him.
Under David Moyes, the forward has found it difficult to get opportunities, which has led to his impending departure this summer. But a trip to the Championship might spur him into his best form just as quickly as Jack Clarke’s success has since relocating to Wearside.
This season, Mubama has played for West Ham in both the Premier League and the Europa League, so he won’t be joining as a rookie straight out of academy football this summer.
Mubama’s ability to emulate Clarke is “incredible”
Any player would not choose to leave the Premier League lightly, but many—including Clarke—have emphasised the advantages of doing so. As a struggling young player, the winger left Tottenham Hotspur, but he eventually made a name for himself at Sunderland, earning connections for a return to the Premier League. Mubama can now pursue a similar course, which is advantageous for Sunderland.
It wouldn’t have been an easy choice to not extend his contract past the current campaign after spending so much time at West Ham. In the end, though, Mubama was forced to make this decision in order to get playing time with the first team.
Having been so full of praise for the forward in the past, Kenny Brown, the academy manager of West Ham, will be among those watching if Mubama ends up joining Sunderland before reaching his full potential.
Brown told the club’s official website: “When you’ve got players with the attitude and work ethic like Divin, it makes our job as Academy staff and coaches so much easier. Younger players in our Academy are now looking up to Divin, and taking on board the way he manages his lifestyle, because it’s impeccable. That’s a massive credit to him on a personal level. He has truly enjoyed an incredible season and he’s a great personality too.”
