Sunderland transfer situation set for resolution with all eyes on EFL game this week ahead of major decision

Sunderland will decide on the transfer future of goalkeeper Matty Young in the next fortnight.

The 18-year-old England youth international stopper was sent on loan to Salford City during the summer window but has yet to feature in the league since making the move with Jamie Jones, 35, preferred by manager Karl Robinson.

However, Young has recently shown promise in cup games, saving two penalties against Wolves in the Papa John’s Trophy before taking center stage in the FA Cup last weekend. Salford City advanced to the FA Cup third round for the first time in their history thanks to the goalie’s save of another penalty and clean sheet against Cheltenham Town, earning him the Man of the Match award.

Young hasn’t played many league minutes, therefore Sunderland has been thinking about what to do with him in January. Kristjaan Speakman has the option to use the recall clause in the contract to bring the keeper to Salford this winter if he so desires. The matter is still pending and no decision has been reached as of yet.

According to The Echo, if the League Two team doesn’t play Young in the league this month, the young player will probably be called up to the Academy of Light before being loaned to another team. But following his cup exploits last weekend, there are rumors that Young might unseat Jones, the first choice. As a result, everyone will be watching Tuesday night’s League Two match between Salford City and Harrogate Town.
Salford City secured a lucrative matchup with Premier League winners Manchester City in the third round proper thanks in part to Young’s FA Cup heroics. With 21 points from 16 games so far this season, the Gary Neville-owned team is now ranked 15th in the league.

Sunderland recently confirmed that Young has put pen to paper on a new deal on Wearside that is set to run until 2028 with the goalkeeper seen as a an eventual long-term first-team option.

Speaking after the announcement of Young’s new deal , sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “We’re pleased with Matty’s progress at present and thrilled that he has extended his contract through to 2028. His recent England Under-20 debut at 17 years of age provides a nice reference point of where he is currently and through continued hard work and dedication, he can go on to achieve much more.”

“Signing this deal until 2028 means so much to me because I love this club,” the midfielder continued. I’ve been here for almost ten years, and I’m happy to stay longer. It was a significant milestone for me to travel and train with the first team for the first time last year. Since then, I’ve learned a lot while on loan at Salford City and Darlington. My goal is to keep working hard and obtain the opportunity to play for Sunderland someday.
