‘The best midfielder in Scotland’… Celtic have a player who, according to Peter Martin, is better than Matt O’Riley.

The great thing about Celtic is that they have a plethora of talented players who are all beginning to shine this season.

Matt O’Riley is the most obvious. After his performance against Atletico Madrid in a 2-2 draw at Celtic Park, the 23-year-old midfielder was dubbed the best player in the country.

Luis Palma has also received numerous accolades as the Honduran destroys the Scottish Premiership and the Champions League.

But none of those three have piqued the interest of pundit Peter Martin. Martin was overjoyed with Celtic captain Callum McGregor’s performances for his country after watching Scotland qualify for Euro 2024.

“I look at our midfield three and the way they play and you think to yourself, McGinn strong as an ox runs himself in the ground,” Martin said [PLZ Soccer].

“For me the best midfielder in Scotland, Callum McGregor. He is like a well-oiled machine he just keeps the whole thing going and then you’ve got Scott McTominay.”

McGregor is without a doubt a Celtic legend. His trophy cabinet boasts eight league titles, five Scottish Cups, and seven League Cups.

Despite this, he has only won Player of the Year once, in the season 2020/21. McGregor has been named to the SPFL Team of the Year three times.

However, he will now be representing Scotland in a second major tournament. And with the squad Steve Clarke has put together, it’s difficult to bet against them making it out of the group stages.

This Scotland team has no fear. They demonstrated this with convincing victories over Spain and Norway. And McGregor’s performances have been central to those outcomes.

If Scotland can make it out of the group stages for the first time in their history, McGregor will be able to add that achievement to his 53 caps and go down as a Celtic and Scotland legend.
