The Japanese international pulled up seven minutes into a crucial Champions League game against Atletico Madrid at the end of October and has struggled with fitness since. At the turn of the year, he came on in the dying moments of a 3-0 victory over St. Mirren before departing for the Asian Cup with his country.

Hatate did, however, sustain another injury in Qatar. He currently has problems with both of his calves.

The 26-year-old has never reached a consistent level of ability this season or since Rodgers  returning to Glasgow. He has made only 11 appearances in all competitions for the Hoops this season.

However, before the season ends, he could return to the team and make an impact. On Friday, the gaffer gave an update on his condition, admitting that he could return within the  month.

When asked if Hatate would return to the team before the international break at the end of March, Rodgers replied (The Celtic Way): “Hopefully, it will be before that in terms of being with the squad, but he may not be available to play until after it.

“He’s working really well, and we’ll be happy when he is back.”

Celtic have three more games until the next international break, which is scheduled for the weekend of March 23/24. Hatate’s first match back, an away game against Livingston at the end of the month, could be his long-awaited return.

Notably, this is the final game before the Glasgow derby at Ibrox on April 7th. Having a player like the treble winner, who has a knack for breaking down strong defences and conjuring up magic from nothing, back for a title-deciding clash would be a huge boost for Celtic.
