The latest on Celtic transfer links with Sydney van Hooijdonk

Celtic have yet to make an official approach to Bologna about the possibility of signing up striker Sydney van Hooijdonk in January.

The Scottish champions were linked with a move for the player, son of former Celt Pierre, during the summer transfer window.

More recently, reports in local Italian newspapers had indicated enquiries had been made about a potential loan switch or another structure of deal in January.

However, Football Scotland reported tonight that it’s their understanding nothing official has taken place about a move for the Dutch striker at this stage.

Celtic could provide Sydney van Hooijdonk with what he needs

Van Hooijdonk is out of favour when it comes to regular starts for the Serie A club. He’s made just five appearances off the bench this term but did score in his only start for Bologna in the Italian Cup against Hellas Verona last month.

Last season he was a big hit out on loan at Eredivisie side Heerenven, scoring 19 goals in all competitions.

Now 23, he needs to find regular football somewhere and delivered a message to that effect earlier this month, stating: “I’m at a good team and I like life a lot. But I have to do what’s best for my growth. For my career. I also have to play.

“In football, things can change quickly. There are two months left until January and who knows what will happen?”

With Celtic apparently on the hunt for attacking talent in the upcoming window, notably said to be keen on Mathias Kvistgaarden, it’s worth keeping an eye on Van Hooijdonk’s situation.

For now, the Bhoys have yet to make their move or indicate they are planning to.
