The Portugal Under-21 international proved his worth as a valuable member of Brendan Rodgers’ squad last season, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 33 appearances [Transfermarkt].

According to reports, Celtic attempted to renegotiate his buyout clause of £6 million for around £3.5 million.

Nonetheless, some have suggested that his wages could be a stumbling block in reaching an agreement between the two parties.

As Celtic fans await the outcome of the transfer market, more details about Bernardo’s situation have emerged.

Despite ongoing negotiations with Celtic, Bernardo will attend Benfica’s pre-season camp, according to Portuguese publication Record. Roger Schmidt is looking to add to his squad because several internationals are still away on duty.

He is joined by Henrique Araujo and Martim Neto, but none of the three are expected to have long-term careers at Estadio da Luz.

According to the outlet, Bernardo’s ‘plan’ is to move to Scotland permanently, reiterating his desire to join Celtic ahead of the new season.

Nonetheless, until both parties reach an agreement, he will continue to train for his parent club despite being deemed surplus to requirements in Lisbon.

Although this development may concern Celtic fans, he is a Benfica player. His participation in their sessions is standard practice. Hopefully, the Bhoys can finalise a deal that will bring Bernardo back to Parkhead before the season begins.
