Danish billionaire eyes up Premiership club

Anders Holch Povlsen Dundee United interest as Denmark's richest man explores investment
Scotland’s richest man has been linked with a potential investment in Dundee United.

Mark Ogren, a US businessman, currently owns the Scottish Premiership club after acquiring the majority shareholding from Mike Martin and James Fyffe in 2018 for approximately £1 million. During Ogren’s six-year tenure, United has gone through many ups and downs, including promotion, European qualification, relegation, six different managers, and upwards of £10 million in spending.

The Minnesota-based businessman stated at the club’s AGM in February that he had no plans to sell in the near future, but it is no secret that he would be open to external investment. According to reports in Denmark, Anders Holch Povlsen is considering investing in the Tannadice Park club.

Danish billionaire credited with interest in Dundee United

The Danish billionaire, who owns the clothing chain Bestsellers and is the majority shareholder in online fashion retailer ASOS, has established a ‘Football Collective’ division of his company. His Heartlands company already owns FC Midtjylland in his home country, has a partnership with Portuguese club CD Mafra, and operates talent schools throughout Africa.

The 51-year-old is Scotland’s largest private landowner, owning over 220,00 acres across 13 estates in the Highlands. According to the most recent Sunday Times Rich List, he is the country’s wealthiest individual with an estimated net worth of £7 billion. In addition to his Highland properties and estates, Mr. Povlsen owns the historic Jenners building on Edinburgh’s Princes Street.

According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Povlsen is interested in acquiring shares in Dundee United after having “checked what it takes legally and practically to buy into the Scottish club”. According to The Courier, United executives have received no approach from Povlsen, but future discussions are possible.

Povlsen is said to have a close relationship with Brentford chairman Matthew Benham, having bought FC Midtjylland from him last year. Benham was said to have expressed an informal interest in collaborating with United earlier this year, but nothing materialised.
