Rangers “want to make changes” that will have an impact on the 2023/24 season during the winter transfer window, according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who provides GIVEMESPORT with an internal update from Ibrox.

Philippe Clement has been part of a positive turnaround at Glasgow Giants in his first few months in charge, but he may see January as an opportunity to close the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers are set to play European football after Christmas, which means the Gers may look to bolster their squad in order to compete both domestically and on a continental level. The Light Blues are hoping to carry their impressive domestic form into the busy winter months and win a trophy at Ibrox.

Rangers’ recent performance

Since Clement’s appointment in October, there has been a remarkable turnaround at Ibrox. The Rangers had started the season poorly, looking dishevelled and inept under former head coach Michael Beale. The Gers were on the back foot from the start, having lost 1-0 at Kilmarnock on the first day of the Scottish Premiership season in August 2023.

While results improved briefly, the month was defined by Rangers’ inability to advance to the Champions League group stages, having been defeated 7-3 on aggregate by Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven. Beale’s job was made untenable by a drop into the Europa League, followed by home defeats to Celtic and Aberdeen. He was fired in October.

Rangers have remained unbeaten in the league since Clement’s arrival at Ibrox, thanks to Clement’s appointment. The Gers are eight points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic after a 1-1 draw at Aberdeen on November 26th, despite having played one game fewer than their arch-rivals.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT on November 2nd that Clement’s appointment had begun to show ‘encouraging’ signs at Ibrox.

Rangers and Clement have the opportunity to win the first silverware available during the 2023/24 season this month.

Following a 3-1 victory over Hearts in a Viaplay Cup semi-final at Hampden Park in November, the Gers will face Aberdeen in the final on December 17th. After losing 3-1 before the recent 1-1 draw, the final is far from a foregone conclusion, which Clement will use to motivate his players.

Dean Jones on Rangers

Rangers are unlikely to do “anything too spectacular or drastic” during the 2024 winter transfer window, according to Jones, implying a summer overhaul. According to the transfer insider, the Gers may need some time to get things right. Jones stated to GIVEMESPORT:

“It’s always going to take some time to get this right. I think January will be about making a couple of changes. We won’t see anything too spectacular or drastic. They want to make changes that can impact this season. Once we get to the summer, I’d expect more of an overhaul. I think that that’s the moment when you have to buy into the vision and go all out to try and make it happen. But it’s not easy in January, and it’s probably not sensible to go into the market with all guns blazing.”

Rangers transfer rumours

As the 2024 winter transfer window approaches, Clement hopes to make changes to his squad in order to put them in the best position to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title. Rangers may look to add a left-back and striker in January 2024, according to Football Insider.

Clement believes his team is imbalanced, with too many players in one position and too few in another. The 49-year-old has confirmed that recruitment for the January market and the 2024/25 campaign is currently underway.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph reports that Rangers are interested in signing Mason Cotcher, an ex-Sunderland and England U17 forward. The forward has been training with Arsenal since leaving Sunderland, but the Gers may have the upper hand in the race for his signature. Cotcher may see a more direct path to first-team football at Ibrox, which could influence his decision.

Rangers’ upcoming games

Rangers must prepare for a busy month, with few opportunities for rest, after welcoming St. Mirren to Ibrox on December 3rd. The Gers travel to Edinburgh on December 6th to face Hearts, while Dundee travel to Glasgow on December 9th.

On December 14th, a trip to Spain awaits, with Real Betis hoping to avenge their 1-0 defeat at Ibrox in September. The Viaplay Cup final is on December 17th, followed by Premiership games against St. Johnstone and Motherwell before Rangers’ final match of the season, a trip to arch-rivals and current league leaders Celtic.
