Three players who are in the running for Celtic’s Player of the Year
Celtic still have a lot to win as the season comes to an end because the Scottish Cup and league are still up for grabs.
However, the season has been somewhat up and down for the fans. It has been tough to watch the team struggle with form, and it is also difficult to choose the player we believe has the best chance of winning Celtic’s Player of the Season.
Due to his injury, Cameron Carter-Vickers would be a tough choice, and Kyogo Furuhashi is most likely out due to his lack of goals.
Nevertheless, these three Fotmob-rated players are all serious candidates for Celtic’s Player of the Season.
Matt O’Riley’s erratic Celtics season
Matt O’Riley, rated at 8.0, has won Celtic’s man-of-the-match title nine times so far this season. Here are some of the Danish international’s most striking statistics, which make him the Hoops’ highest-rated player on the football website:
- Goals: 11
- Assists: 10
- Chances created: 68
- Shots on target: 30
- Passing Accuracy: 83.1%
- Duels won: 174
- Tackle success rate: 51%
- Ball recoveries: 180
O’Riley has played 39 games for Celtic in Europe and at home, missing only the team’s 3-0 victory over Ross County in November of last year.
The 23-year-old’s form did slightly deteriorate at the beginning of the year after a stellar start to the season in which he made three assists in the Champions League.
With his play returning, O’Riley has helped Celtic maintain their hopes of winning the league title with three assists and a goal in his last three games.
The surprise package for Celtic is Liam Scales.
Liam Scales, who has a 7.82 rating, has been Celtic’s standout success story this year. Arriving from the cold, the Irishman appeared to be heading out of Celtic.
However, Scales made an impression by stepping up during a defensive injury crisis, and he has hardly missed a beat this season. Here are his detailed stats:
- Passing accuracy: 88.6%
- Assists: 2
- Chances created: 17
- Duels won: 382
- Tackle success rate: 64.3%
- Ball recoveries: 169
- Chances blocked: 7
- Dispossessed: 4
Scales has made 36 appearances this season and is a constant in Brendan Rodgers’ lineup. Despite being injured at the moment, the Republic of Ireland international has only missed four games so far this season.
Scales has improved both domestically and in Europe, and he hasn’t looked out of place in the Champions League despite not playing for Celtic prior to this season. He even recorded an assist in Feyenoord’s 2-1 victory. [Transfermarkt]
No fan of the Celtics can dispute that Scales has had an excellent season for the Hoops, despite certain weaknesses in his game.
Callum McGregor: Captain Fantastic of the Celtics
It should come as no surprise that Callum McGregor is a contender, to be honest. 7.77 out of 10 This season, the Celtic captain has been outstanding, and if he hadn’t been injured, he would have participated in every game that Celtic has played.
As usual, McGregor is the driving force behind Celtic’s midfield strategy, their style of play, and the team’s achievements. These are his season-long stats:
- Goals: 2
- Assists: 5
- Chances created: 44
- Shots on target: 8
- Passing accuracy: 91.8%
- Duels won: 111
- Tackle success rate: 62.2%
- Ball recoveries: 203
McGregor had participated in every game that Celtic had scheduled this season except one before suffering his most recent injury. The captain, who controls the middle of the midfield, is the team’s main motivator both domestically and in the Champions League.
Remarkably, this season the captain has only been named man of the match once. As always, McGregor is a deserving candidate for this honour because he has no discernible weaknesses in his game.
These three players have been Celtic’s season’s highlights thus far, and each one of them ought to be in the running for the post-season trophy.
