Rangers F.C
To get the Rangers winger flying, Philippe Clement needs to give Scott Wright this directive.
Rangers recruitment in the summer was questionable in that we never replace Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala who had been our first-choice wide players, with Scott Wright rejecting the chance to move on too.
There is a relatively simple fix that Rangers can take to address Scott Wright’s shortcomings, but the team’s summer recruitment was dubious in the first place.
ever take the place of Fashion Sakala and Ryan Kent, our first-choice wide players, and Scott Wright turned down the opportunity to advance as well.
Wingers have been essential to the team’s comeback to form under new manager Philippe Clement, with each member of the squad getting an opportunity to make an impression.
Rangers can address Scott Wright’s consistency issue; Clement must make do with what he has.
Oscar Cortes appears to be a valuable addition, but until the end of the season, Wright will continue to play minutes in order to keep players like him fresh.
However, it doesn’t look good to be replaced at halftime by a utility player who has played defence for the majority of his career.
Wright possesses the fundamentals of the kind of player that Clement enjoys.
He works hard, moves quickly, and is straightforward; the only issue is that his proficiency with basic passes has an immediate impact on our ability to create chances.
The ideal example comes from a single first-half moment against St Johnston
Wright only needed to play a five-yard pass into the Rangers playmaker in a 2 v 1 with Todd Cantwell, but he did so too quickly and too far away.
Midweek against Ross County was the same.
The 26-year-old is a great player who often finds himself in great positions, but his final ball and decision-making are far from adequate, which is why he will likely leave in the summer.
What then is Clement able to do about it?
Make it easy.
Change it up and direct the players to make specific runs instead of depending on Wright to select a teammate.
When Ross McCausland or Wright gets the ball, they know they just need to play it into a specific area and don’t need to look up.
For players making thousands of pounds a week, finding the six-yard line or penalty spot should be relatively simple.
The other option, which is what we witnessed on Sunday, is to play a different character who may not be precisely what Clement is searching for but will nevertheless have an impact.
