UEFA makes official decision ahead of Manchester United vs Rangers for Europa League’s ‘Battle of Britain’
UEFA has confirmed Erik Lambrechts as the referee for the highly anticipated Europa League clash between Manchester United and Rangers at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old Belgian official, known for his extensive experience in European and international competitions, will oversee the crucial fixture in the league phase of the tournament.
Match Officials for the ‘Battle of Britain’
Lambrechts will be assisted by Jo de Weirdt and Mathias Hillaert as linesmen, with Nathan Verboomen serving as the fourth official. VAR duties will be handled by Bram Van Driessche, alongside German assistant Benjamin Brand.
Lambrechts has officiated four Europa League matches in his career, averaging five yellow cards per game, according to WhoScored.com. Notably, this will be his first time officiating matches involving either Manchester United or Rangers.
A High-Stakes Europa League Clash
Both Manchester United and Rangers find themselves under immense pressure, with the result likely to determine which team automatically progresses to the tournament’s last 16.

Rangers
Managed by Philippe Clement, Rangers have faced mounting challenges this season. Despite a strong home record in the Scottish Premiership, their away form has been disappointing, with only three wins from 11 league matches. However, their European performances on the road have been commendable, including a standout 4-1 victory over Ligue 1 side Nice.
Manchester United
Under new manager Ruben Amorim, Manchester United has struggled domestically, with inconsistent form at Old Trafford. They have won just five of their 12 home league games while suffering six defeats. However, their European campaign has been more stable, with 12 points from six matches and no losses so far.
Implications for the Europa League
Both teams aim to secure an automatic spot in the last 16, adding further intensity to this critical match. For Rangers, a victory would reinforce their strong European run, while Manchester United will look to leverage their consistent continental performances to maintain their standing.
Kick-off is set for 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 23, in what promises to be a thrilling encounter between two storied clubs.
