Dallas Mavericks
Unbelievable Luka Doncic stats show that he and Klay Thompson are a perfect duo.
The longest part of the NBA offseason has arrived, with the Olympics officially over and training camp still a month and a half away.
The majority of free agents across the league have already signed with their new teams, and fans are eagerly anticipating the season’s start in late October. Dallas Mavericks fans, in particular, are excited for the upcoming season, as the team is poised to be a top Western Conference team once again.
Dallas made moves to improve their roster around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, such as trading for Quentin Grimes and signing Naji Marshall, but their most significant move came a few days into the offseason, when they signed and traded for Klay Thompson.
Dallas desperately needed more shooting after a poor 3-point shooting performance in the NBA Finals, so they went out and signed the best shooter on the market.
Doncic’s on-ball gravity demonstrates how he and Thompson will dominate.
Thompson averaged 17.9 points per game for the Golden State Warriors last season, shooting 38.7 percent from downtown, and while his stats appear to be excellent (even from a “down” year), his new running mate Doncic’s stats show why he’s the perfect fit in Dallas.
According to BBall Index, Doncic had the highest on-ball gravity in the NBA. This means that teams try to stop Doncic when he has the ball the most in the NBA. Teams frequently send double teams his way, and when Doncic has the ball, the defense is all over him.
Thompson will thrive off the ball, given how much attention the opposing team is focusing on Doncic. Thompson has been an elite off-ball player his entire career, and now that he plays with Doncic, he will have more open looks than ever.
The Mavericks are also planning on different and “creative” ways to incorporate Thompson into their offense next year, with limitless possibilities for how they use him. Doncic is one of the NBA’s best passers, and if Thompson is open, Doncic will find him.
While everyone will be talking about the Doncic-Irving duo next year, the Doncic-Thompson duo and the Doncic-Irving-Thompson trio should also be mentioned. The game will become much easier for Thompson because the majority of the opposing team’s defense will be focused on Doncic, and the moment they give Thompson a few inches, Doncic will find him.
