Update on New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr’s Move to NY Jets

The New York Jets’ plans for a new quarterback in 2025 have taken a major hit, as one of their top potential targets is now officially off the market.

With the team exploring every avenue—from free agency to trades and the NFL Draft—to find a viable successor to Aaron Rodgers, a familiar name had emerged as a strong possibility: New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr.

However, any hopes of Carr landing in New York have been dashed. Saints GM Mickey Loomis confirmed at the NFL Combine that Carr will remain the team’s starting quarterback in 2025, despite speculation that New Orleans could cut ties with him to create $30 million in cap space.

Jets Lose Out on a Strong Short-Term QB Option

Carr, despite his team’s struggles, has put up solid numbers in New Orleans, throwing 40 touchdowns to just 13 interceptions over two seasons while leading the Saints to a 14-13 record. Though his stats may be slightly inflated, he would have been a top-tier option in a relatively weak quarterback market.

The Jets previously showed interest in signing Carr before ultimately pivoting to Rodgers, making him a natural fit if the Saints decided to move on. Additionally, Carr’s connection with star receiver Davante Adams—his former teammate at both Fresno State and the Raiders—could have been a key factor in keeping Adams happy, had the Jets pursued a trade for the wideout.

Jets Must Pivot to Other QB Options

With Carr off the table, the Jets will now have to consider alternatives. The market features names like Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Marcus Mariota, though none offer the same level of reliability. A potential reunion with Sam Darnold or a bold move for Matthew Stafford also remain long-shot possibilities.

In reality, the Jets may have to wait until 2026 to find their long-term franchise quarterback. Carr would have been a dependable bridge starter in the meantime, but now, the team must pivot to Plan B—whatever that may be.
