VAR made a mistake in 43rd minute of Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle, Jamie Carragher agrees – opinion
The result moves Newcastle up to eighth in the Premier League ahead of the international break.
However, the comeback could have been a lot easier for Eddie Howe to manage – had VAR not missed a vital moment in the 43rd minute involving Ryan Yates and Sean Longstaff.
Ryan Yates should have been sent off by VAR in Nottingham Forest 1-3 Newcastle.
Just before halftime, Nottingham Forest’s No. 22 charged in with a knee-high lunge on Newcastle’s No. 36, with Anthony Taylor standing just feet away.
Longstaff chose to continue rather than turn the incident into a meal, even though he could be observed yelling in agony.
Regardless of his response, though, we believe that Yates’ challenge was worthy of a dismissal and that VAR erred in failing to investigate the matter and suggest that Taylor should have been given a red card.
Carragher seemed to agree. Speaking on commentary duty for Sky Sports, the 46-year-old said: “Longstaff does Yates a favour there. He got away with an elbow earlier on.”
It was not dissimilar to the challenge from Daichi Kamada on Kenny Tete during Fulham’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, which resulted in the Japan international being shown a straight red card.
