Hamer’s move to Sheffield United appeared to be a positive development for him, but he may be regretting it now.

Gustavo Hamer: Who is Sheffield United's new £15 million signing?

During the summer transfer window, Gus Hamer’s move to Sheffield United appeared to be a great fit for him.

After managing to shine for Coventry City since his arrival, his final contribution came in the play-off final against Luton Town, where he scored the equaliser.

Unfortunately for him, the Hatters won on penalties, which all but confirmed that he and Viktor Gyokeres would be leaving the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Both eventually left, but Gyokeres was the more successful of the two, scoring for Sporting Lisbon and attracting interest from Premier League giants.

Hamer, on the other hand, has scored a few goals for the Blades this season.

Unfortunately, Chris Wilder’s side has failed to adapt to the top flight, and they appear to be on the verge of relegation in the latter stages of the season.

And, with the midfielder signing a four-year contract upon his arrival at Bramall Lane, he could be forced to play Championship football next season.

Coventry, meanwhile, could be on the rise.

Coventry struggled early in the season, which is not surprising given that key players left and new signings needed time to settle in.

However, they have recently gained momentum and are in the promotion mix, with Mark Robins’ side having the potential to secure a spot in the top six.

That is not guaranteed, but given the quality of their players, they have a good chance of finishing above Hull City and Norwich City to secure sixth place.

They are not only doing well in the league, but they have also advanced to the FA Cup fourth round after defeating Wolves 3-2 away.

Ellis Simms and Haji Wright scored stoppage-time goals to set up a match against Manchester United, and Hamer would have relished the opportunity at Wembley.

Gus Hamer might be envious of Coventry City

Hamer will be delighted for his former club, but he may wish he was still with them.

While he appears to be returning to the second tier, the Sky Blues will compete for a place in the FA Cup final, where they have a real chance of defeating a Manchester United side that makes mistakes at times.

The Red Devils are frequently subjected to intense media scrutiny, and their status as firm favourites may work against Erik ten Hag’s side.

Winning against United in the capital would be an outstanding accomplishment.

Hamer will also be disappointed that he was unable to complete the job and lead the Sky Blues to the top flight.

He may feel he has unfinished business at the CBS Arena as a result of this, and if the Sky Blues do win promotion, his decision to relocate to Bramall Lane will appear poor in retrospect.

Despite this, you can’t blame him for moving to South Yorkshire over the summer. Even so, you have to wonder how much of an impact he would have had at Coventry this season.

When he was substituted against Leicester City on the first day of the season, it highlighted how important he was to the Sky Blues – and if he had stayed, they could be in the top six today.
