As the January transfer window approaches, speculation around player movements intensifies, and questions about transfer plans have become a staple of media engagements. Watford head coach Tom Cleverley is no exception, fielding inquiries about potential squad changes in the coming months.

Speaking recently[Watford Observer], Cleverley acknowledged the importance of maintaining focus while evaluating areas for improvement:
“The old clichés come out now about taking each game as it comes, but we feel we’ve done enough to be in the top-six picture. Now it’s about the areas of improvement, and I think we are all on board with those as well. If we unlock those areas, then I think we can kick on even further.”

He added that discussions with key figures at the club, including Gianluca Nani, Scott Duxbury, and the owner, are ongoing:
“I’m in constant contact, and we are trying to forward plan and see where we are maybe thin in numbers or we could bring a little bit more to our game. But I’m completely happy with the squad as it is at the minute, and I think we’re doing a good job of all pulling in the right direction.”

Injuries Could Shape January Strategy

Cleverley highlighted the unpredictability of injuries as a factor influencing transfer activity:
“Things like Tom Dele-Bashiru’s setback might trigger something. That sort of thing applies to all areas. We’ve got two centre-halves out. If we were to get a third injured, then that might trigger something too. It’s a moving landscape, but I reiterate again how happy I am with the squad we’ve put together.”

On Giorgi Chakvetadze and Player Rumors

The coach also addressed concerns about potential distractions caused by transfer rumors, particularly surrounding standout player Giorgi Chakvetadze. Cleverley expressed confidence in the player’s professionalism:
“Giorgi isn’t the type that would lose focus. He’s a fantastic professional who does his job to the highest standard he can and lives his life right off the pitch. I’m sure there will be interest in him, but I know he’ll stay focused.”

Regarding the club’s stance on selling key players, Cleverley referenced assurances given by Duxbury:
“It was a question Scott was asked at the fans forum, and he said we try and run a budget where it means we don’t have to sell our best players in January. I’m sure that will be the case.”

As Watford look to solidify their position in the Championship’s top six, the club’s measured approach to January will aim to balance short-term needs with long-term goals.
