‘We are struggling’ – Stephen Welsh says one essential component will help Celtic turn the season around.
Celtic will now compete for the Scottish Premiership title after this weekend’s events knocked them out of first place.
Yesterday, the Bhoys let their guard down against Kilmarnock at home as David Watson cancelled out Kyogo Furuhashi’s headed opening goal in the 32nd minute by nodding home in stoppage time to salvage a point for the visitors.
Brendan Rodgers, who had to settle for a share of the spoils, acknowledged that his team’s dismal performance at Parkhead wasn’t shocking.
“To be honest, I can’t say I’m surprised,” he said after the game. I was hoping to finish the game on the strength of a subpar performance. But we were unable to complete it.
Although Rodgers’ team has now gone ten games without a loss in all competitions, it is extremely concerning that it would be difficult to find any Celtic fan who could name more than one or two strong performances during that streak.
Naturally, there’s the minor issue that Alistair Johnston, Reo Hatate, and Cameron Carter-Vickers are currently out with injuries, which has limited the Irishman’s options within the team.
However, the defending champions have far too frequently faltered through games this season and can only blame themselves for their current situation.
Stephen Welsh believes that a crucial element will aid Celtic’s comeback.
For the last three games, Stephen Welsh has started in central defence for the Hoops, slotting in Republic of Ireland international Liam Scales [Transfermarkt].
Following the game, the 24-year-old did media duties and expressed his opinion that, once Rodgers has a full roster at his disposal, Celtic will be “raring to go” in their pursuit of a domestic double.
“There are big possibilities for us between now and the end of the season, but this is when we like to start playing our football,” he said in response to questions from the Daily Record.
Before the break, we had a rough patch, but we were also having trouble with injuries. Now that the majority of our players are back, we’ll be ready to go and compete in both competitions once we have our entire squad available. We have challenging matches ahead of us, but the faith is strong. We want to win every single game that we still have. That is the constant pressure there. We are accustomed to and thrive on it, whether it’s a cup tie or title decider.
“I love the big games, the high-stakes games where both teams are under a lot of pressure to win, but only one team can prevail. We’re excited for the encounter. Although it will be difficult, we will enjoy it.
In the next few weeks, Celtic must find their footing.
Celtic are currently in a difficult situation, but fortunately, they still have a lot of games left in this season. To ensure that, though, they will need to get back on track.
Week after week of lacklustre performances won’t be enough to turn the title race around, and Rodgers will have to come up with a strategy to guarantee that his main players get back to their best during a critical window.
At Parkhead, time is of the essence. The Irishman and his players’ hopes of winning the title are in make-or-break territory over the next few weeks.
