What 24-year-old Celtic target has previously said looks like bad news for Brendan Rodgers – opinion

The January transfer window is almost upon us (well, in six weeks) and most of the talk surrounding Celtic is surrounding Brendan Rodgers’ need to trim the squad.

Brendan Rodgers lauds Celtic for erasing Atletico pain in big win over Aberdeen

However, Celtic do still need to add players to key positions in the squad in order to strengthen the side and one player that has recently been linked to the club has spoken out on where he sees his future.

Japanese attacker, Kanji Okunuki, was linked to the club last week and TBR Celtic warned that a move for the 24-year-old may not be the best option for Brendan Rodgers.

But it seems that the decision to move for him may be taken out of Celtic’s hands as Okunuki revealed his ‘strong desire’ to play in the Bundesliga in an interview that he held back in April when he was at Polish side, Gornik Zabre.

Okunuki said [Soccer King], “I have a strong desire to continue playing in Europe. I want to survive here and keep fighting.

“Ever since I was in junior and senior high school, it was my dream to play abroad. I used to watch a lot of foreign football, especially the Premier League. I saw players dribbling and tearing through the field, and I had a yearning to play overseas.

“I think I am also looking at stepping up to the big five leagues.

“Germany is close and Podolski is there, so I feel close to Germany. I often watch Bundesliga matches and get inspiration from them.”

The Japanese forward is currently plying his trade at Bundesliga 2 side, Nurnberg, where he signed a deal just this summer.

In 15 appearances, Okunuki has scored five goals and created two assists for the German side as they sit just two points from the automatic promotion places.

However, another winger is just not what Celtic need right now. With Mikey Johnston wanting first-team football and Marco Tilio both making noises about leaving Parkhead to get more minutes on the pitch, adding another player to that position will only bloat the squad further and push these players further down the pecking order.
