Where Coventry City rank among the Championship’s most valuable teams

Following a successful few weeks for the Sky Blues, we looked at the value of their squad in relation to other Championship clubs.

It’s fair to say that Coventry City fans have had a great couple of weeks.

The Sky Blues reached the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1987, thanks to a dramatic late win away to Premier League side Wolves, and the club is now in contention for the play-offs after a run of form in which they have lost only twice since February 3.

The club is eighth in the league, four points off the play-offs, and has a game in hand, so the Coventry fans can expect an exciting season finale.

After being in League Two as recently as 2018, the Sky Blues have experienced a resurgence under Mark Robins and are now a solid top-half Championship club with ambitions to reach the top flight.

Coventry City’s squad is ranked eleventh in the Championship.

We used Transfermarkt to compare the Sky Blues’ total market value to their Championship rivals.

According to Transfermarkt, the total market value of Coventry City’s squad is €54.85 million (£46.86 million).

This places the club in 11th place, with Midlands rivals Leicester City leading the pack with a total market value of €211 million.

It’s not surprising that the three Premier League clubs that were relegated are the top three in terms of market value for their squads.

Leeds United is in second place with a squad market value of €204 million, followed by Southampton with a squad market value of €189.

Hull City is the next best team, with a market value of €105 million. This is €85 million less than Southampton, demonstrating the disparity in squad depth and spending power that the three relegated Premier League clubs have over the rest of the division.

Championship squad market values – Transfermarkt
Position Club Total market value
9. Watford €61.65m
10. Stoke City €58.60m
11. Coventry City €54.85m
12. West Brom €53.60m
13. Blackburn Rovers €52.55m
14. Birmingham City €50.95m

Coventry’s squad market value places them roughly in the top half of Championship sides, sandwiched between Stoke City and West Brom, who have market values of €58.6 million and €53.60 million, respectively.

It’s no surprise that Rotherham United has the league’s lowest squad value of €14.75 million, followed by two clubs that won promotion last season, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle, with values of €20.18 million and €30.40 million respectively.

Coventry City is punching above their weight under Mark Robins.

Given that Coventry’s squad is ranked 11th in the Championship, they are clearly punching above their weight with their league position and run to the FA Cup semi-finals.

The club made it to the play-off final last season but fell short, losing on penalties, so they will be hoping to go one better this season and possibly record a historic FA Cup and promotion double.

Since taking over in 2017, Robins has transformed the club, and it’s fair to say they’re more than the sum of their parts, thanks to the former Manchester United striker’s man-management.

Nothing has been won yet, but Robins has the club punching above its weight, and despite some Championship clubs having squad market values of more than €200 million, Coventry are the only side in the division still fighting on two fronts, with a squad worth a quarter of that amount.
