In the final months of the season, reports from Portugal reported that that Celtic were interested in buying Paulo Bernardo from Benfica.

Celtic's Paulo Bernardo explains simple reason behind his recent burst of goals

Following the midfielder’s loan spell, Brendan Rodgers’ side had a €7.5 million option to keep him, but that clause was never triggered.

According to a recent article in Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã about Benfica’s transfer market , they point out that the salary is the main reason why Paulo Bernardo isn’t staying at Celtic.

The outlet highlights some past mistakes made by the Eagles, one of which was giving the midfielder a contract that allowed him to earn €1 million clear of taxes each year.

That is considered too much, and Celtic now believe he has ‘too high a salary’ to buy him, as he is likely asking for a similar amount to sign a permanent deal.

Benfica will learn from this experience and avoid repeating it with João Neves, who is currently negotiating a new contract.

As for Paulo Bernardo, it appears that Celtic would need a very good offer to persuade him to give up what he currently receives from the Eagles.
