Why Keane did not play for Man United Legends?

Keane’s ongoing feud with iconic Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is often wrongly thought to be the reason behind his absence.

But while he still harbours resentment towards his old mentor, the 53-year-old claimed that his fitness prevents him from playing again.

Speaking on the Off the Ball podcast in 2022, Keane declared, “I’m not fit.” I’m not at all fit. It’s really really embarrassing how unfit I am.

“I’m not saying I’m fit just because I haven’t gained a lot of weight. Running wouldn’t really be an option for me.”To put it another way, I’ve received numerous invitations to play legends games, or whatever you want to call it, over the past few years. “I would find it really difficult because I wouldn’t be able to get around,” I said. Too many issues with injuries.

“I try to have a decent diet obviously and I’m wary of putting on too much weight, but I certainly wouldn’t be fit enough to go on any sort of run.”

Only six months after joining Celtic, where he made just 13 appearances, Keane announced his retirement due to injuries.

Five years after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in 1997, the retired midfielder had hip problems that kept him out of the game for months.
Keane had a stellar 12-year career at Manchester United, winning seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and one Champions League.
After a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes, Man United Legends lost to Celtic 5-4 on penalties while he was away.
